TNA Lockdown 2013

Total Nonstop Action Proudly Presents...

TNA Lockdown 2013

Welcome, cats and kittens, to yet another installment of the only reviews that have their own special room in the psych ward for when reviews go wrong, Cewsh Reviews! We have a special treat for you tonight, as we induct another show into the 5 Times Reviewed Club, namely TNA Lockdown 2013. Now we have had a long and sordid relationship with TNA over the years, as you well know. We've laughed, we've cried, we've cried more, we've thrown shoes at tvs, it's all very melodramatic. And last year we made the decree that we would only review the major TNA events because the product had become virtually unwatchable. TNA has obliged us by cutting their PPV schedule down dramatically, but this is still the first time that we've visited the house that Jarrett built in a good long time. And the last time we visited, (TNA Bound For Glory 2012,) it was probably the angriest review that we have ever done. But hey, 6 months can change quite a bit. So let's see what we've got here. Jeff Hardy as champion. Lethal Lockdown match featuring Eric Young as the dangerous wild card. Aces and Eights. Brooke Hogan. Chavo Guerrero. Okay. Um, right. Shit. Well, hell, let's just go for it and hope for the best. After all, if TNA has proven one thing again and again, for better and for worse, it's that they always have the ability to surprise us.

So without any further ado, let's do a motherfucking review!

WWE Wrestlemania XXVIII

World Wrestling Entertainment Proudly Presents…

WWE Wrestlemania XXVIII

Welcome, cats and kittens, to yet another installment of the always delightfully insane Cewsh Reviews! We have a special treat for you tonight as we finally come to the conclusion of the wrestling year with the single biggest event in professional wrestling, WWE Wrestlemania 28. This year WWE seem to have outdone themselves with stars aplenty and feuds galore. We’ll see two of the biggest names in wrestling history do battle to decide which is the bigger star, two legends duke it out to end an era, and two smark love affairs collide. There will also be a Kane match. This, along with all the pomp and circumstance implied therein, can be yours for the low low price of simply continuing to read after this paragraph is over.

Still with us?

Good. Because not only do we have the big show, (also The Big Show,) to consider, but we’ve rounded up the classic dream team of Cewsh and Vice to tackle it, as well as a very special guest viewing her very first ever pay per view. She’s seen the days of Wahoo McDaniel and Ric Flair, she’s perhaps the Rock’s biggest fan on this or any planet and hey, she gave birth to the greatest wrestling reviewer on the planet. I could only be talking about Mama Cewsh making her reviewing debut, and we have not told her anything about anyone on this show, so it’s all first impressions. Boy oh boy does she ever have some opinions to share. So lace up your boots and queue up your music, because it’s time for the show.

So without any further ado, let’s do a motherfucking review!

TNA Hardcore Justice 2011

Total Nonstop Impact Wrestling Action Proudly Presents…

TNA Hardcore Justice 2011

Welcome, cats and kittens, to yet another installment of the only wrestling review blog with a pet dinosaur, no matter what those assholes at Tyrannosaurus Flex say, Cewsh Reviews! We have a special treat for you tonight as we investigate the second to last stop on the road the Bound For Glory, TNA’s Hardcore Justice 2011! Whereas the second to last stop on the road to Wrestlemania is the much anticipated Royal Rumble, here TNA takes a different approach by instead giving us a show where, grammatically at least, the justice exacted will be entirely hardcore in nature. So if you like your just hard with a well defined core (who doesn’t) then this is most certainly the show for you. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, after all, we have several titles on the line, some stable in fighting, and some other people wrestling for reasons and purposes. REASONS AND PURPOSES I SAY. What more could you want?

So without any further ado, let’s do a motherfucking review!

WWE Wrestlemania XXVII

World Wrestling Entertainment Proudly Presents…

WWE Wrestlemania XXVII

Welcome, cats and kittens, to yet another installment of the reviewers that bring in the viewers, Cewsh Reviews! We have a special treat for you tonight, as the culmination of the wrestling year (or the part of it your grandma may have actually heard of anyway) is nigh, and it is finally time for WWE Wrestlemania XXVII! Now the sheer media blitz of Wrestlemania (and our preview special if you’re a good little Cewshketeer) has probably made it abundantly clear what is on this show, so I’m not going to waste any more time hyping it for you. All I’ll say is that excitement is high among the CR Clan going in and we have champagne wishes and caviar dreams about how things may go. Will this Wrestlemania top last year’s above average show? What the fuck will the Rock actually be doing here? And for fuck’s sake, will anyone actually get made a star on the greatest stage of them all? Only one way to find out.

So without any further ado, let’s do a motherfucking review!

TNA Turning Point 2010

Total Nonstop Action Proudly Presents…

TNA Turning Point 2010

Welcome, cats and kittens, to yet another installment of the late, great review that makes you wait, Cewsh Reviews! We have a special treat for you tonight as we heard down to Orlando Florida for a little shindig called TNA Turning Point 2010! Well Immortal has taken over, and the TNA landscape is pretty hopeless for any of the good guys now. Jeff Hardy, Abyss, Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff, Jeff Jarrett and Fortune have joined forces into a supergroup of unheard of scale and they have wrested control of TNA from the hands of Dixie Carter. With the sky dark and the prospects looking grim, can any blow be successfully struck against Immortal? Or will they continue to run rampant over TNA, and make it their own for good. And how the hell is Jeff Hardy supposed to be a bad guy anyway? Only one way to find out.

So without any further ado, let’s do a motherfucking review!

PWG KURT RUSSELLMANIA 2010

Pro Wrestling Guerilla Proudly Presents…
 PWG Kurt Russellmania 2010

Welcome, cats and kittens, to yet another installment of the often deceiving Cewsh Reviews. Now to some of you we promised a mano e mano battle of wills between Vice and I in a debate to the finish. That won’t be happening until later (though we have the final list of debate topics determined and we’ll be posting those later), so to apologize for getting your hopes up, we’ll be instead delivering a review of a show of such awesome proportions that it defies the powers of mere mortals to comprehend. Luckily, as Cewsh Reviews fans, you are endowed with superhuman intelligence and taste, and therefore can understand that this show is what would happen if you took the combined awesomeness of Kurt Russell and Wrestlemania and threw them together at high speed. You may recall that we previously reviewed a PWG show a year or so ago, and you may have considered it our definitive word on the promotion but not so fast my friend (as Mel Kiper might say), this time, for THIS show, we have Jushin Thunder Liger, the Great Muta, Rob Van Dam, Super Crazy and the one night only reuniting of Paul London and Brian Kendrick. Yeah, you just read that. This show has more awesome on it than ACTUAL Wrestlemania.

In other words, the mere touching of your monitor while reading this review may cause the sprouting of chest hair and the growth of an extra testicle. We do not apologize for these effects, even in females, because YEAH MAN KURT RUSSELLMANIA WOOOO.

So without any further ado, let’s do a motherfucking review!

WWE Breaking Point 2009

World Wrestling Entertainment Proudly Presents…

WWE BREAKING POINT

Welcome cats and kittens, to yet another installment of the Tony (Danza) Award winning Cewsh Reviews… We have a special treat for you tonight as we review the very first, to my knowledge, submission themed PPV in wrestling history, WWE Breaking Point! Rather than your regularly scheduled WWE show, we have, as I mentioned, a submission themed show here, and one main evented by the heavily Cewsh Review sponsored CM Punk at that. So to say that there is intrigue to see how this show goes is an understatement. Can WWE turn this idea into something truly special like Survivor Series or the Royal Rumble? Can CM Punk cement himself as a main eventer for life tonight? Will Vice end his life rather than to have to see John Cena and Randy Orton face each other? Only time and our local coroner will tell.

So without any further ado, let’s do a motherfucking review!

Segment 1 – OPENING VIDEO FEVER!

Cewsh: So they start out the night with this video package which shows most of the major players that will be featured tonight through a sort of broken glass picture effect, making all the images seem like they’re being seen through a broken mirror. This is interesting enough, but then after about 5 seconds they abandon that for your normal, by the numbers video package. Which is a shame, because its been a long time since either of the major companies really impressed me with their output in this area, despite the absurd talent that both WWE and TNA have in this area.

Yes, that’s right. We’re starting the night off with compliments for both TNA and WWE. Whether this continues or not is entirely up to them. (And by “them” we mean whichever one of them doesn’t employ Rhino).

Also, didn’t everyone important in Lynard Skynard die in that plane crash? Did they record the theme to this PPV Tupac style, from beyond the grave? Mysterious!

Segment 2 – WWE Unified Tag Team Championships – (The) Jeri(Peep)Show © vs. M(Mars)V(Venus)P(Pluto, Oh Wait, Not So Much) and Mark (The Shark) Henry.

Cewsh: Right off the bat, this is kind of a hard match to call. See, a few months ago, the idea of Mark Henry and MVP teaming up, as faces, and getting a tag title shot on PPV would have come off as certifiably looney bin, so to see it actually occurring is somewhat surreal. On the other hand, however, this whole mini feud has actually gone really well, in no small part due to Big Show and Chris Jericho being absolutely on fire at making everyone they face look like legitimate threats to their title reign, no matter how unlikely those opponents may be. They made Cryme Tyme look like a Salma Hayek in a school girl uniform (good, to say the least), and now they’ve been doing the same for these two guys. Can the magic continue?

Mmm, Salma Hayek. One moment please.

Ah, now let’s continue.

The match starts off with each guy coming down in their swanky way, including MVP debuting a new ring outfit with the sleeves cut off, with looks loads better, and less like he’s wrapped in really bright Saran Wrap. The match begins, and we get pretty much what you’d expect. Jericho and MVP spend a lot of time wrestling with each other, and then one of the big guys comes in and fucks shit up for awhile. Now despite the overness of Jericho here in Montreal (and he is over), I would be completely remiss if I didn’t mention just how over Mark Henry is in this match. MVP gets his pops here and there, sure, but every time Henry does ANYTHING, from trying to slam the Big Show, to bullying Jericho around, those motherfuckers explode like fireworks in a match factory. He’s so over, actually, that the end of the match winds up coming off as much hotter and more fun than it really was, and the crowd deserves some genuine credit for taking this good match, and making it really fun to watch. I know I’m down on the fans a lot, but they were in it to have fun here, and it helped everything along.

As for the match in and of itself, well it wasn’t mind blowing. Jericho and Show made MarkVP look good, and like genuine threats, and that’s pretty much exactly what the job description entailed tonight. It wasn’t as good as their match against Cryme Tyme, but then, Cryme Tyme are an actual tag team with more than 3 weeks of working together, so really its natural that that would be the case. I don’t know if this feud is going to continue on, or if Jerishow are moving on to bigger and better things, but everyone can go home tonight knowing they did a fine day’s work.

70 out of 100.

Vice: MVP and WSM have matching attire for the most part. Guess who looks better in it?

This is a good opener and a fairly good match overall. Mark Henry is ridiculously over, here. Amazingly so, even. Jericho doesn’t get the hero’s welcome because apparently he shat on Canada recently. God forbid he get cheers in his own country. Fucking foreigners.

Big Show and Jericho win. That’s pretty awesome, I guess. Big Show’s “WE CAN’T BE BEAT! YEAH! WE CAN’T BE BEAT!” reminded me of drunken video game trash talking, but it was still kind of cool. Big Show is quite large, mind you.

Jerishow Over MarkVP Following A Right Hand From Show To Henry.

Segment 3 – Legacy. Cody’s The Smart One. Ted’s The One Who Uses Props.

Cewsh: Legacy are backstage and they cut a promo talking about how this match with DX is just going to be a fight, and that even though they aren’t big submission guys, it won’t matter, because they’ll find other ways to win. Then Ted pulls out some DX glowsticks (conceivably purchased from WWEShop.com!), to illustrate the point that DX are fun and flashy, but are destined to fade away to irrelevance. Powerful stuff. Almost as powerful as this whiskey in front of me.

Oh drunken reviews, you’re MY legacy.

Segment 4 – WWE United States Championship – Kofi (Ice Joggings) Kingston © vs. The Miz (Rather Than, Say, The Fizz).

Cewsh: Initially I can’t shake the feeling that this should have been the match that opened the show, even if I had no real idea that this match was even going to take place on this show at all. Still though, Kofi really was surprisingly over with this crowd coming out, and a high flying midcard match always works wonders as an opener to get the fans excited. But I digress.

Both men make their way to the ring, and in a moment of true journalistic shame, I realize that I didn’t know until this exact moment that Kofi Kingston was still the United States champion. They make such a small amount of fuss about him on television, that its frankly an afterthought, more or less. The Miz, on the other hand, is given tons of tv time in his spiffy new “I’m a real wrestler now” outfit, even though he’s only the challenger, so I KNOW that he ISN’T the champion, but would like to be. The match starts, and pretty much instantly they jump into the near falls. Now ordinarily, I am not for endless strings of nearfalls defining the structure of a match like this. Going for pins is great, and adds to the match, but sometimes (see most of the Miz’s solo matches), the desire to make midcard matches feel somehow more grandiose than they are can work against a match of this type and cause it to break down into a bit of a mess. Thankfully, that isn’t the case here as these two guys show great chemistry together from the outset, and set about putting on a show.

Oh yes, a show is exactly what we got, as both men repeatedly try to go for all of the signature moves in their arsenals, hitting most, and dazing each other into what seems like surefire victories at various points. Towards the end of the match they begin swapping nearfalls like they were goddamn Pokemon Cards (or whatever the kids do these days, whippersnappers), and neither man can definitively gain the upper hand, as they go back and forth over and over until finally, out of nowhere, comes the knockout blow, bringing this match to a close.

This wasn’t a perfect match, and I don’t think it would really be fair to expect it to be. Both of these guys still seem to be finding their feet in the ring, and neither has really established themselves definitely as a solo guy yet. However, this match was a great indicator of what these two men may well become down the line, and I was reminded of nothing so much as the Randy Orton/Shelton Benjamin and Randy Orton/Edge matches from a few years back, when all the guys involved were making their way to the top little by little, and you could see the potential ooozing off of them, looking for the right place to be funneled. These guys have it, and they work great together. I hope this isn’t the last time we get to see them together.

77 out of 100.

Vice: Miz speaks French, Kofi still speaks Rasta. Well, when he gets mic time. It’s really astonishing how far Miz has come. Yeah, I know I’m a bit late to the Mizwagon, but I really didn’t see it until very recently. To me he was always the better-than-he-should-be TV guy, but now I see him as a legitimately good wrestler and overall talent. He is such a penis.

This was a very fun little match. It was nothing groundbreaking or amazing, but very solid and enjoyable. Was kind of hoping to see Miz pick up the title, but Kofi can hold it forever as far as I’m concerned.

And yes, Sting’s crow theme > Kofi’s theme.

Kofi Kingston Over The Miz Following The Trouble In Paradise.

Segment 5 – Submission Counts Anywhere Match - D(Destruction)-Generation X vs. The Legacy (Of…Rain?).

Cewsh: This feud has been the goddamn macaroni and cheese. The Kraft kind. Not that Velveeta bullshit they try to push on you to be somehow classier for no reason. These two teams have come together and are producing some matches and angles that are just absolutely white hot, and have rejuvenated both teams to the extent that I would have accepted this as the main event of this PPV. I controversially gave these guys’ tag match at Summerslam not only a score putting them way out ahead for Tag Match of the Year, but right up there with any match anywhere in the world that we have seen this year. I don’t know if this can live up to that, but I’m excited as hell to find out.

DX comes out first, and cut their usual spiel, but before they can direct all of us to suck things, the entire crowd as one breaks into a chant of “You Screwed Bret”. Now to those of our stalwart readers that perhaps are not aware of what they’re referring to, people in Montreal are still slightly peeved over the events that occurred at Survivor Series in 1997, where Bret Hart, a Canadian National Hero, was essentially (and oh so controversially) “screwed” out of his WWE Championship by Shawn Michaels, Earl Hebner, and Vince McMahon because he was leaving for WCW. This was a real thing that happened, as near as anyone can figure, and not at all a storyline. As this happened to their hero in their city, Montreal fans have been notoriously touchy about this, even a decade later. Rather than ignore the chants, Triple H stands up, acknowledges them, and then informs them all that it was all Shawn’s fault, as Shawn tries comically to shush him. The fans laugh, they get on with the show. Problem solved. You have to give Triple H credit for that. He never let it rattle him, and with a few words he won people who believe they have every right to hate him over to his side.

Why did it take him so long to become a babyface?

The match starts and it immediately spills out to the floor. Both teams immediately lock on to one another and pretty much start brawling all over the arena, making this look more like a Street Fight than a Submission match. In the midst of all of the fighting, though, all 4 men try out various ways of getting the other guy to submit, all of which impressed the hell out of me with their inventiveness. From using the handrails on the stairs to choke a guy, to using a chair to administer a sick looking Sharpshooter/Camel Clutch combination, to duel Figure Fours in the midst of dozens of screaming fans, this match was just a study in arena brawling, with the submission twist serving to make the whole thing seem incredibly fresh and fun to watch.

There’s a ton of brawling and fun spots, and they even manage to work in numerous babyface in peril moments, to point out to me the brilliance of the fact that they turned this into a traditional tag match, just on a grander, more unique scale. The heels get the heat, the face made the comebacks, and all the while Legacy just kept chipping away at them, and chipping away at them, and isolating them one at a time and wrecking havoc, and just looking like absolute killers out there, while DX played the roles of heroic babyfaces working hard against an unexpected threat that even the MONTREAL audience came around to the side of Triple H and Shawn Michaels after awhile, and seemed to forget that they had been chanting “You Screwed Bret” just minutes earlier.

I won’t spoil the ending here, but suffice to say that Legacy came away from this match looking like absolute Greek Gods, and while I don’t know where things go from here, I honestly don’t care. Legacy are so hot and excellent, and fantastic right now that they could feud with fucking Doink and Dink and I’d be glued to the screen to see them, and DX look vulnerable for the first time in ages, and have finally met a team that they can’t joke their way past. Wherever this goes, and however this ends, I’m in, man. I’m in.

89 out of 100.

Cewsh’s Download Seal of Approval.

Vice: Ah, Shawn Michaels in Canada. Wait a minute, DX just got an insane face pop. Then Triple H reminds us all about what happened over a decade ago and blames Shawn. Ok, that actually made me giggle a bit. Crowd chants YOU SCREWED BRET, which is the least surprising thing in the world to me. It’s a vicious cycle, really. Canadian fans won’t shut the fuck up about the screwjob, but at the same time, WWE seriously just can’t go to Canada without totally fucking with them. It will probably go on forever.

That said, this was a very fun match. Yes, Cewsh, it reminded me a lot of WWF/E back in the day. Like, I dunno, the Attitude Era?

This match was full of fun stuff, with the youngsters going up against the guys that were cool (if they were ever…) doing this gimmick over a decade ago. You know, I really can’t wait for Triple H to turn heel again and foam from the mouth constantly. The highlight of this match was the cooler of death. Not only is Triple H knocked out with it initially, but Ted whacks Triple H in the skull with it once more while he was out. It was fucking hilarious.

Oh, and honorable mention goes to Shawn Michaels’ 8 foot fall onto the mattress. Oh the brutality! I thought this was a PG show!? Yeah, use a mattress/box fortress if you’re doing a spot where someone is falling 20-60 feet, but if it’s a relatively small spot, either take it like a man or don’t bother. It just looks stupid. It reminds me of those backstage brawls where two guys are trying to kill each other. One picks the other up and powerbombs them onto.. a bag of packing peanuts. When looking to end the career of another, don’t even think about slamming them onto the hard ground. Or the cinder blocks laying around. Or cars. Or anything else around. Slam them onto a bag of packing peanuts. It also takes me back to stuff like the build-up to Wrestlemania with HHH and Batista back in the day. One person is about to get run over by JBL’s limo (I think) and someone makes the save by shoving the other onto a giant mound of soft cardboard boxes, sitting there for absolutely zero reason. But I guess they should be thankful for that mound of soft cardboard boxes, because falling over onto concrete could kill you, you know.

Even though it took both men applying a submission hold to Shawn to get the win, it still put Legacy over huge. And bloody hell was that an amazing dual submission. Maybe it’s a DUBmission. Get it? Yeah. What a dubmission. Legacy looked like a million bucks here. The absolute most important thing about their victory, though, is that Triple H did not pull a sledgehammer out of the ref’s collar and absolutely kill Legacy after the match was over. It’s sad how awful Triple H tends to be with stuff like that. He’ll beat the crap out of someone, win, and then beat the crap out of them some more to show his dominance. If he loses, he beats the crap out of them to show his TRUE dominance and that it was merely a fluke. Hell, when people help him out, he generally beats the crap out of them too just so that he’s the last man standing. It’s shitty.

Shawn Michaels tapped out in Canada, though. Like, he actually tapped out. His hand moved and hit the ring post a few times and all that. CLOSURE, right? Let’s see how badly WWE fucks with the WWE Universe in the main event. I mean, it IS a submission match in Montreal.

Legacy over DX Following A Figure Four/Million Dollar Dream Combination On The Ringpost.

Segment 6 – Josh Matthews Is A Dick.

Cewsh: Josh Matthews goes into Randy Orton’s locker room, and asks if he can ask one question. Orton agrees to this so long as Matthews sits down and asks him. Matthews does, and asks about Legacy. Orton says he knew they’d win. Matthews tries to ask another question, and Orton completely, and rightfully, calls him out for lying about only having one question.

Oh snap JM! You got bizzurned forshizzurned! You were all like “Can I ask another question?” and he was all like “Bitch please!” and you were all “Sad face” and I was all “Say whaaaat?!”

Ahem.

Orton then proceeds to cut one of the most wonderfully evil promos I’ve ever heard anyone cut this side of Jake Roberts, and basically says that John Cena can’t know that he is incapable of quitting until Orton shows him. Its creepy, its evil, and its leagues ahead of anything Orton was managing even a few months ago. I don’t know what they’re putting in the water in The Legacy’s locker room, but fuck man. Share that shit out.

(Cewsh Note: Vice informs me that as Matthews sits down he blatantly farts. Now I am not going to check this for myself, but those those of you interesting in a WWE announcer breaking wind on a live show, by all means check it frame by frame for yourself.

Weirdo.)

Segment 7 – Singapore Cane Match – (Singapore) Kane vs. The Great (Bait) Khali.

Vice: Oh what to say about this match. Shitty? Dreadful? Fuck you, WWE?

Think negative and use your imagination.

Cewsh: Hmm. Welp. It was a Kane and Khali match. With Singapore canes this time.

So, uh, yeah. Stuff happened and stuff. People got hit with canes. People fell down. People punched each other. I ate Cinnamon Sticks from Dominos.

That’s about it.

47 out of 100.

Kane Over The Great Khali Following A Chokeslam.

Segment 8 – CM Punk Talks About Current Events.

Cewsh: Specifically about Jeff Hardy’s arrest and how that basically makes him totally and completely right about everything he’s said for weeks. Its hard to argue with him, since he pretty much foretold the future, and he says that since he was right about that, he’ll be right about his ability to beat the Undertaker too. Then the lights go out and he freaks the hell out, but it turns out to be Jimmy Wang Yang with the light switch fucking with him. Punk then proceeds to beat ten kinds of fuck out of Yang before calmly finishing the interview and wandering off.

Now I wasn’t too keen initially on the idea of referencing something that is such bad publicity for wrestling like the Hardy thing, but since it really does add tons of credibility to Punk’s character and statements, and since it was my beloved Punker who was doing it, I really can’t fault the idea, and it was presented as an afterthought, which is good too. No need to dwell on the badness.

Also, CM Punk is amazing. But you already knew that.

Segment 9 – ECW Championship – Christian (At Last You’re On Your Own) © vs. William (A Man’s Man) Regal.

Cewsh: Christian? Regal? Yeah, okay. I think I can get into that. That’s what we in showbiz call MOTIVATION.

Christian and Regal come out, Regal with his entourage or Vladamir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson, and Christian, conceivably buoyed by his Peeps. The ring announcer states that the ECW General Manager Tiffany has given him a ruling that Jackson and Kozlov are barred from ringside for this match and that if they do not leave immediately then Regal will forfeit his title shot. To say that William Regal is displeased about this is an understatement. So they leave, and Regal successfully gets his robe off without losing any matches, and they get started.

From the start this is sort of an oddly paced match. Regal and Christian have styles that, while both excellent, don’t necessarily mesh in the greatest of ways, in much the same way that Regal struggles often against guys who don’t work stiff and intense like he does. They still put together an enjoyable contest, though, as all of the staples of recent Christian matches get their time in the sun, and Regal is allowed to look like his dastardly self. Ultimately, though, I had trouble getting into this match, and it didn’t feel like it had very much emotion to it. Maybe it was a lack of chemistry, maybe it was a clash of styles, or maybe it was just that the match didn’t work out the way they wanted, but I came away from this feeling vaguely disappointed that it wasn’t more than it was.

They busted their asses to have a great match, and I’d never fault them for that, but I can’t help but feeling like these two guys have a great match together in them. I can only hope to see it one day, and tell you concretely that this was not it.

69 out of 100.

Vice: This is the match I was expecting at Summerslam and was upset that we didn’t get. However, at least we got it this time. This is Regal doing what he does best—just beating the shit out of his opponent. Also, I’ve gotta say how much I love Regal’s look these days. So much better than when he had really short hair and red trunks. He was still an awesome wrestler, but looked really stupid. He just looks like a massive badass these days. I like how he’s not in amazing shape, either. There’s something more convincing about a guy with a body type like his (and like Finlay) than super toned guys when it comes to knocking people silly. I love Regal. Christian has been great since his return to WWE.

This was a very good match. Tons of stiff strikes, nasty suplexes and general ass kicking. Everything I wanted it to have. I’m slightly sad that Regal didn’t win the title, but it’s not like I was expecting him to. The ending made a lot of sense, too. It just worked. It almost made me forget that Kane and Khali were in the previous match.

Christian over William Regal Following The Killswitch.

Segment 10 – Dolph Ziggler Should Refrain From Quitting His Day Job.

Cewsh: Pat Patterson comes out to celebrate his hometown of Montreal and the upcoming 30th anniversary of the Intercontinental Championship, the first winner of which was, of course, him. He cuts a snazzy little promo in French and the crowd laps it up, despite the man not having been on a WWE screen since basically the Attitude Era. Montreal has a long memory. Then he goes to introduce the current Intercontinental Champion, but he gets Dolph Ziggler instead, who comes out and delivers about 30 of the worst old man jokes I have ever heard and then kicks Patterson in the stomach, and bails before Morrison makes the save.

Now my advice in the header is meant earnestly, but if he’s attempting to be a great heel instead of a stand up comedian (absurd, I know), then he did a bang up job because he got the holy blubbercunt booed out of him in the short time he was talking, and Morrsion got a huge pop for making the save. So yeah. He’s really good at his day job. Which is lucky for him AND us. Can you imagine a Vegas act with Jillian singing and Ziggler telling jokes? Ugh. Doesn’t bear thinking about.

Segment 11 – WWE Championship – I Quit Match – Randy (He Hears Voices In His Head) Orton © vs. John (BRABADOO!) Cena.

Cewsh: Coming into this match I was dangling somewhere between “Meh” and “I guess I want to know who wins.” Following the 3 minutes of brilliance that can only properly be categorized as a hype video, I jetted all the way up to “Fucking excited.” That thing reminded me of everything about this feud that is awesome and great and exciting and completely masks anything bland or uninspired, and as a result they have manufactured just that simply a big fight feel that this match desperately needed in order to succeed. Well fucking done WWE. You stepped up big time, and now I’m ready to get this show on the motherfucking road.

Now I said this match had a big fight feel. I was wrong. This match very quickly, through the introductions and the presenting of the title, acquires a feel more closely related to a Wrestlemania match than a Vengeance match. Then, as the tension mounts, Cena charges Orton to get things started, as Orton tries desperately to fend him off. As the opening moments go by this is all Cena all the time. Cena slams and bumps Orton around for awhile until Orton changes up the momentum with a monitor shot to the head of Cena.

From then on, this is the Orton Show guest starring a beat the fuck up John Cena. He pulls Cena half into the ring to deliver his patented rope DDT, and the referee asks Cena if he’ll quit before he gets the move done to him. He refuses and BLAM, planted into the mat, where he stays motionless for several moments as Orton sets up a chair for a repeat of the devastating RKO he performed on Cena on Raw. Cena fires up and makes his comeback though, onto to be shut down again by Orton. The Viper strikes again.

A few destructive shots with various objects to the head later, Cena is in a very bad way, and Orton is already looking triumphant. Then he pulls out the handcuffs. Holy shit. Instantly I flash back to when Orton handcuffed Triple H and proceeded to abuse Stephanie so badly it made Triple H cry. He handcuffs Cena to the top rope and the beating continues as Cena repeatedly refuses to say the words “I Quit”, until Orton undoes the handcuffs and cuffs Cena’s hands together, suspending him from the corner of the ring post. This is where the real beating starts. Punches, chair shots, and kicks result, followed by Orton throwing water in Cena’s face to keep him from passing out, which Cena then promptly spits back at Orton.

Big mistake.

Orton goes under the ring and finds himself a kendo stick, and he lays into Cena with it; hitting him so hard and so often that he falls over with the momentum, and raises some of the most disgusting welts on Cena’s chest and stomach that I have ever seen. Cena, though, remains steadfast and still refuses to quit, and somehow manages to fight back, low blow Orton and falling to the floor finally, with his hands bound together. He gets up to finally bring the fight to Orton and BANG, a chairshot to the face sends him to the ground again. Handcuffed to the rope again, Cena finds himself once again at the mercy of Randy Orton, and a mouse could starve on what you can find there. More chairshots, more punishment, and more denials from Cena follow, until Orton gets a little too close, and Cena snatches the key away, unlocking the handcuffs and finally freeing himself.

What does John Cena do once he’s free? He handcuffs himself to Randy Orton. Its fucking clobberin’ time.

Cena peppers Orton with lefts and rights, beating him all around ringside as Orton can’t find any way to get away. He throws Orton in the ring and continues his fire, until Orton hits the RKO out of absolutely nowhere on him, stopping even THIS momentum short. Orton knows it’s a temporary fix though, so he searches about for the key, and finds it barely out of reach. He strains for it, and he STRAINS for it, and he STRAAAAAINS for it, and what he doesn’t notice is John Cena recovering behind him until Cena grabs his leg, wraps the chain and Orton’s own arm around his head, and performs one of the sickest STF’s I have ever seen. Finally, FINALLY, Orton can take no more and submits. John Cena, after all the pain he went through, all that he endured, is your new WWE Champion.

Holy fuck, man.

I don’t know what I was expecting from this match. I don’t know if I thought it was just going to be another brawl in the vein of their past matches or what, but I was not expecting this. For nearly half an hour these two men put on a show that was as emotional as anything I’ve seen on television or movies this year. They did everything possible to not only tell a story, but to tell a totally unique story unlike anything I’ve ever seen in a wrestling ring, and it worked. Every second of it worked. Even the fans deadest against Cena, who sounded ambivalent at the beginning of the match were screaming their guts out one way or another at the end. I just can’t say enough about it. It wasn’t perfect by any stretch, but it was just so fucking emotional and exciting that I’m willing to forgive almost anything for it.

This, simply, was a fucking great match.

Vice: This whole match just felt like a scene from a TV show/movie. The way each person did their part, the mannerisms, the events.. everything. By now you must know how I feel about that. There were a bunch of parts that annoyed me, but a lot of things I liked. There are a lot of things I hate about the use of handcuffs in these sorts of matches. Mainly 1) if you have your opponent handcuffed to the ropes, why would you ever take the cuffs off? Just keep them there, ‘cause they can’t exactly do a heck of a lot. To add to that, once your opponent is cuffed, GET RID OF THE MOTHERFUCKING KEY FOR FUCK SAKE. Don’t wear it around your neck. Don’t leave them sitting in the ring somewhere.

I know it’s just wrestling and stuff like this adds to the drama, but I just wish wrestlers/refs/commentators/everyone weren’t fucking idiots. Heels are like villains out of cartoons. Faces are just complete morons. Refs are deaf, blind and mentally handicapped. My intelligence is constantly insulted. I just want people to act somewhat like how people actually act. Is that seriously too much to ask for?

I really loved how John Cena would say no when the mic was put in his face. He was in so much pain that he was eerily calm, fighting through it with heart. I have never been handcuffed to a wrestling ring and had someone beat the shit out of me with a Singapore cane.. but I have had moments where I was in extreme amounts of pain.. and John Cena hit it perfectly. However, when he was cuffed to the ring post and Orton hit him with the chair…

EEEEHAhahaheYYEayeahYEAYEAHHAHAHEEHAHAAYAAOOAOOOOAOAOEHHEYYAYAYAAAAaAAaAAIAOAOFAOAOAOIIPPRAAIRIOOOOYOYYYOOOOAEAEAHEHAEAHhahHAhaaaaaaHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Oh man. I lost it. I had to watch it like 30 times because it was so fucking hilarious and ridiculous. I think it’s the most John Cena has ever overacted, which seriously says something. Amazing bit of unintentional comedy. Loved it. I’m honestly thinking about ripping out the audio, looping it a bunch of times.. maybe even slowing it down into a manly roar.. and using it as the alarm on my phone.

The ending to the match fucking sucked. The match was basically 95% Orton killing Cena, then Cena hitting his famed five moves of doom (give or take) and Orton taps out. Yes he is a heel and sometimes very cowardly, but that doesn’t mean he needs to quit after spending 3 seconds in the modified STF. Through all of his ridiculous tactics, he’s shown that the title is a part of him. It means a lot to him. He doesn’t want to give it up. He will do whatever it takes to hang on to it. But wait~! I QUIT I QUIT.

Bullshit.

Orton sells 3 moves better than Cena sells 15 minutes of Iraqi torture. Fuck John Cena. He is a good talent and a fantastic wrestler to have under contract, but he is seriously not one of the best wrestlers in the world. Learn how to sell properly and consistently, you fucking chimpanzee. I’m not looking forward to this piece of shit having another title reign, I can tell you that much. Book him properly for god sake.

YOUR WINNER AND NEW WWE CHAMPION: John Cena!

Segment 12 – World Heavyweight Championship – Submission Match – CM (Communist Milkshake) Punk © vs. The (Holy Shit) Undertaker.

Vice: Now this is the match I want to see. A few years ago when WWE signed young CM Punk to a developmental contract, I really did think by now he’d be back in ROH, and we’d still be complaining that he was such a wasted talent by WWE. But, he is a god in WWE and doing things I never would have ever thought he’d be doing. Like, I dunno, FEUDING WITH THE FUCKING UNDERTAKER? And, of course, you know.. walking into the match as world heavyweight champion. In the main event.

Watching this live, I was already somewhat disappointed as the match begun. With only a small amount of time left in the show, the need for a video package, entrances (including Undertaker’s iron man entrance), introductions and post-match shenanigans, how much of a match could there be?

I wasn’t expecting some 35 minute showcase of godliness, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I expected more than 10 minutes or so. I’m not sure if that’s how much time they were allotted to begin with, or if they were running behind and the main event just got shafted.. but it wasn’t a very long match. It just seemed to get started when it finished.

And by finish, I mean when Undertaker used a banned move to get the win. But, this is a submission match in Montreal of all places, so who reaaaaaally thought this match was over?

After another minute of wrestling, Punk locks the Vice in and the bell is rung. This is when it punches me in the balls how amazing this whole scenario is. I could ramble on about how astonished I am about Punk’s accomplishments, but he just fucked the Undertaker over in Montreal. How epic is that?

Punk is absolutely astonishing in the post-match. He’s such a cock. I would absolutely love it if he became the “model” champion. Mr. McMahon doesn’t want druggies and liabilities, so Punk is the perfect title holder in his eyes, and thus the two align with each other. Punk uses McMahon’s influence and power to project his straightedge beliefs with more of a voice, and McMahon makes sure that Punk holds onto the title. As long as Punk would stay badass, though. I wouldn’t want him doing a complete 180 and being a total chickenshit, because that would ruin everything.

I look forward to a longer Punk/Undertaker match. Hopefully they can put on a true classic.

Cewsh: Man, did you ever think we would see the day? I know it seems like I say this every month now, but every month, the story becomes more and more incredible. 3 time World Champion, main evented Summerslam, retired Jeff Hardy, and now this motherfucker is feuding with the fucking Undertaker. I wish I could be cool and say that I saw this coming, but I didn’t man. Not even close. I doubt even Punk could have. What a glorious age we live in, where the skinny kid from Chicago who feuded with Raven and crawled into my favorite wrestlers list seemingly just yesterday is now on top of the biggest wrestling company in the world. What a fucking great world, man.

So this absolutely unbelievable match of monumental proportions gets started exactly the way it should, With CM Punk running away and taunting the Undertaker. He makes Taker work for it for awhile before the Digitized Demon From Death Valley finally gets a hold of him and starts working him over. Punk takes control back by actually reversing the Old School (!), and they have some great back and forth until the Undertaker, completely out of nowhere slaps on the Hell’s Gate and Punk taps out.

Wait, what?

That’s right, Punk taps out, Taker gets the belt and Punk is almost to the back when Teddy Long comes out and points out that Vickie Guerrero banned that move on Smackdown months ago, and that her decision has not been overturned. The Undertaker is MILDLY perturbed at this new, and the match restarts.

As the restart happens, Punk chop blocks the Undertaker, slaps on the Anaconda Vice and immediately the referee calls for the bell. Both Punk and the ref run to the safety of the stage as the Undertaker dons the biggest “What the shitfuck just happened?” expression I’ve ever seen on anyone ever. Upon instant replay inspection, as Punk locked in the Vice, Taker’s hand briefly and gently touched the mat, and the ref decided that was him tapping out. CM Punk retains the title, and heads to the back with a huge smile on his face.

In case you somehow didn’t grasp that the first time, let me repeat it. CM PUNK REDID THE MONTREAL SCREWJOB. The crowd sat in just absolute stunned silence after this, as if they had no idea what to think, and the only sound was possibly me sitting in my living room laughing so hard I nearly threw up. CM Punk, this kid I’ve been watching since I was in high school, has grown up to re commit the most controversial event in the history of professional wrestling against the Undertaker while main eventing a PPV for the World Heavyweight title. Jesus Christ, I’m sick with how amazing this was. Punk came off as possibly the greatest heel I have ever seen in all my time watching wrestling, and the Undertaker played his role perfectly too, as a man who is going to kill someone once he figures out what the fuck is going on. Brilliant, brilliant.

This was a pretty good match, but ultimately that’s neither the purpose for this taking place, nor what it will be remembered for. The controversial ending, coupled with these two having gone at it for the first time, is more than enough to recommend this match to you, on top of the good wrestling contained within. There is no, and I mean no, excuse for you to not see this if you are a wrestling fan. Love it or hate it, they made history tonight.

CM Punk Over The Undertaker Following The Montreal Screwjob Part II.

----------------------------------

Cewsh’s Conclusion:

Cewsh: I really liked this show, as I think the score will indicate. It dragged at some points, and didn’t get off to a roaring start, but frankly you could have had Hornswaggle give messy fellatio to Big Dick Johnson in between the three matches that got my seal of approval and it still would have been a great show. WWE has been running some great shows with some fantastic matches running towards the end of the year, and every single one makes me more excited for the next. As for the Breaking Point concept, despite all the speculation that it would ruin things, I really felt like it gave a great sense of overall structure to the show, and something that tied many of the matches together. However since most of the matches didn’t bother with it, most of the time it hardly felt like a concept show at all. If this is the way shows are going to be from now on, then sign me up.

Keep bringing it guys. You’ve got me hooked and reeled, now pull me into the boat for good.

Viva La Punk!

Cewsh’s Final Score: 75.5 out of 100.

Vice’s Verdict:

Vice: Overall this show was pretty good. It had plenty of ups, but also a number of downs. I’d say the good outweighs the bad here, though. And the ending, while WWE just fucking with the Montreal fans yet again, was pretty incredible.

Vice’s Final Score: 65 out of 100.

Dragon Gate USA Enter The Dragon

Dragon Gate USA Proudly Presents…

DGUSA Enter The Dragon

Welcome, cats and kittens, to yet another installment of the review so mysterious that even Encyclopedia Brown couldn’t solve it, Cewsh Reviews… Tonight we have a special treat for you, as we welcome to opening of a brand new wrestling promotion in the United States. Last week it was with heavy hearts that we bid goodbye to the stewards of our imaginations as IWA:MS went out of business, but now we have already a new promotion that, with any luck, will fill the void.

Dragon Gate USA is a promotion run by former Ring of Honor booker, and all around Paul Heyman idolizer, Gabe Sapolsky, and is his first project following his release from the company he helped shape. It is, essentially, just the Americanized version of the world famous Japanese promotion Dragon Gate, and they hope to bring their cult success in Japan here to America. To those unaware, Dragon Gate is well known and renowned for their high flying, their fast pace, and their crazy wackiness. Will this style translate well in the move to America? Will Gabe Sapolsky prove he can book his way out of a paper bag? Will Mr. Sapolsky be able to stop himself from spontaneously orgasming at being in charge of a Japanese wrestling company? Hopefully, hopefully, and very much hopefully.

So without any further ado, let’s do a motherfucking review!

Segment 1 – OPENING VIDEO FEVER!

Cewsh: Alright, so we start off with a little graphic, and then we’re moved to the ring where everything looks EXACTLY like Ring of Honor, aside from some dancing girls in front of a few monitors that Vice would be ashamed to have on his computer desk. Then Dawn Marie introduces the first match, and I become spontaneously confused as to what the fuck she is doing there. Is Dawn Marie still relevant? That smells heavily like Gabe having had a huge crush as a lad and bringing her in despite her relative obscurity.

But be that as it may, we’re keeping an open mind here…

Vice: DAWN MARIE is the ring announcer. She’s not very good, but it is Dawn Marie.

Lenny Leonard is doing commentary for this show, which is quite awesome. I really like him. Yeah, he’s not the best commentator, but I think he has a really good voice for the job and a great way of putting his thoughts into words. I approve of him.

Segment 2 – BxB (Disco Marufuji) Hulk vs. YAMATO (Wears Shawn Michaels Shirts)

Cewsh: This match, and the show itself generally, starts off in the best way possible. With BxB Hulk and two ladies (one of whom Vice assures me is Daizee Haze of Ring of Honor fame), comes out to awesome music and does a little dance for awhile. Which is awesome and adorable, and momentarily makes me feel better about this show as a whole. Any show where adorable Japanese men get to dance to techno pop music is at the very least open minded to the idea of not sucking.

Then out comes YAMATO wearing one of those shirts Shawn Michaels wears that can only be called a shirt because its too big to be called a scarf. They get started in the ring, and I have to tell you that a process began the likes of which I have never experienced. The match begins with them stiffing each other and brawling all around ringside as the fans massively support BxB Hulk as their fan favorite. They get back in the ring, and YAMATO instantly takes the advantage, repeatedly trying to hit his finisher, which is basically a Tombstone Piledriver from a Running Powerslam position. He can’t ever quite get it, and BxB Hulk uses some fantastically fun offense to fight back and win the upper hand.

Then we lapse into the part of the match where I start to seriously enjoy myself. Hulk is doing some really fun, athletic moves, like standing flips and unique counters, and I’m having a fantastic time cheering him on. YAMATO is pretty much just there, and is frankly rather forgettable throughout as Hulk steals the match, but he does his best to keep up, and I find myself drawn in, despite my reservations about the promotion as a whole. Its exciting, its fun, and its fresh, and we’ll call it minutes 11-15. Unfortunately, however, the match does not conclude during minutes 11-15. It unfortunately strays on into further minutes, during which each man drops the other directly on his neck and head probably upwards of 10 times each.

Now look, I know that head drops have been a huge part of Japanese wrestling for as long as there has been Japanese wrestling, really. Stiffness and realism lend themselves graciously to dropping a motherfucker on his head to put him away. But somewhere along the line, 1 neck drop stopped being sufficient, and that leads us to a match like this, where we are subjected to so many horrifically dangerous looking moves, that they cease to have any meaning. There’s neck drop after neck drop, and then the finisher is, get this, a fucking neck drop! Why should we believe that just because one neck drop is this guy’s finisher, its more deadly than, say, the much more sick looking German Suplex he JUST hit on the guy that barely got a 2 count?

Gabe fucking Sapolsky, you inbred streak of piss, you once again gave two guys 20 fucking minutes to open a show of yours in a match that means nothing for no reason. There is absolutely no fucking reason that this match could not have been 5 minutes shorter except, perhaps, for the fact that you wouldn’t have been able to finish beating off by then. Do you even understand that maybe people tune in for main events, and would be pleased to not be exhausted of wrestling by the time they reached them? Do you remember what main events are? Well you’d better, or else you’ll kill yet another hot promotion that had no means of defending itself from you.

Fucking ridiculous.

60 out of 100.

Vice: From massive stoner to Nitro Girl, Daizee Haze comes out with another chick to dance during BxB Hulk’s entrance. Daizee is so adorable.

BxB is pretty fly, and this is a great way to kick off the show. Fun music, energetic entrance, dancing girls.. can’t go wrong. Yamato comes out with some really depressing attire. You know those really fucking dumb shirts that Shawn Michaels and Cody Rhodes wear? Like, the ones that have no sleeves or sides or anything? Yeah. Imagine shorts in the same vein. Just flaps over the front of his legs. He’s obviously wearing trunks as well, but still. Shit is getting stupid. I feel like I should know who Yamato is, as his name is very familiar, but he doesn’t look familiar at all.

This match has one of my favorite spots in all of wrestling. After tons of leg work from the heel to the plucky face, the heel whips the face towards the corner of the ring, but the face’s leg completely gives out and he falls to the canvas. Of course this is completely brushed aside half a second later after the heel goes for it again and he does a cartwheel to avoid it. Then runs around the ring doing flips off the top rope and all kinds of moonsaults and stuff. BUT, and here’s a big BUT... at the end of it all, he does shake his leg. Yes, it was a technique that John Cena used in his Wrestlemania match against Shawn Michaels. After four minutes of leg work and being in agonizing pain, he fires back with lots of running attacks, to which he shakes the leg to show that he was in pain during that entire sequence. Since John Cena can get away with it while working against Mr. Wrestlemania AT Wrestlemania in the main event, then of course BxB Hulk is going to get away with it in the opening match of Dragon Gate USA. The leg shake. Fantastic selling, it is.

Oh, did Cewsh mention that Gabe Sapolsky, the life giver and harbinger of death of Ring of Honor, is booking this show? This is very important to know, because the first match’s booking reeks of him. Why? Well, the match was like 15 minutes long for starters. It was full of all kinds of near falls, false finishes, transition moves six times more lethal than any actual finisher needs to be and every motherfucking thing in the fucking universe being kicked out of. You know how we feel about this, especially when it comes to the opening fucking match. Yeah it was fast and fun, and I found myself enjoying it a lot more than I really should have, but this gives me a sour taste in my mouth for this promotion and reminds me of why I hated Gabe so much towards the end of his ROH days, and a lot of indy wrestling in general. As a standalone match this would probably be pretty awesome, but I see this as an omen. And not a very good one.

This is Dragon Gate and this is booked by Gabe. Clearly we knew what kind of shenanigans we were going to get ourselves into with this show.

This show looks like Ring of Honor.
It sounds like Ring of Honor.
It’s full of Ring of Honor fans.
It’s being booked like Ring of Sapolsky.

So, basically, ROH version 2. Now with more Japanese. I don’t want to alarm any of you guys, but I can almost assure you that Gabe Sapolsky is watching himself jerk off in the mirror right now. And there are thousands of people jerking off to the thought of Gabe watching himself jerk off. In a way, it’s good knowing that Gabe still has his few thousand fans willing to jerk off to anything Gabe-related, ‘cause they’re at least happy.. but Gabe needs to realize that his booking is not good anymore. He needs to realize that he needs to control the talent more. They need restrictions. Sometimes simpler is, in fact, better. Gabe is not a genius. Everything is so overdone that nothing means anything anymore, and that is sad. Wrestling lives and dies through meaningful booking, matches and moments.

YAMATO Over BxB Hulk Following A Head Drop.

Segment 3 – National Geographic Presents…

Cewsh: We go backstage, as an announcer using the cheesiest impersonation of a documentary narrator imaginable talks about the two combatants in tonight’s main event, Naruki Doi and Shingo. He hypes up their rivalry, and opposition for the Open the Dream Gate title (Dragon Gate’s World Heavyweight Championship) and the “Ace” or top star status in Dragon Gate. If it weren’t for the absurdly overacted cheesiness of the narration, this would actually be compelling, but I can’t get over the idea that a used car salesman is trying to sell me these two Japanese men for no money down and zero percent interest.

Too good to be true, man. Too good to be true.

Segment 4 – Team Random (Amasis, Gran Akuma, Icarus and Hallowicked) vs. The Colony (Fire Ant, Soldier Ant, Mike Quakenbush and Jigsaw.)

Cewsh: Alright now, this is definitely going to be something different. Essentially what we have here is the best of the promotion known as Chikara on display for us. Why this promotion is promoting another promotion? I’m not sure, but at the very least we’re going to be free of Japanese guys kicking each other for a few minutes.

So this match gets started and right off the bat, its becomes a clusterfuck, and never really stops being a clusterfuck. When you get this many high fliers in a match together, inevitably the shit is going to get buck wild, so to speak, and this is far from the exception. Motherfuckers leaping all over the ring, doing crazy ridiculous flips everywhere, the Ants doing fantastically fun tag team moves, and Amasis generally being one amusing motherfucker, halfway between the Rock and MC Hammer in a lucha mask. Just an amazing collection of characters, moves, and fun all rolled into a little ball to promote Chikara.

…for the first 15 minutes at least. I accept that I’m conditioned by the WWE and the other bigger companies to accept and anticipate shorter matches, and this is why I don’t understand the true burning soul of the indy fan or wrestlers, but 20 minutes is just too goddamn long to have these guys endlessly arm drag each other. I was so into this that my eyes were riveted to the screen, but around the 15 minute mark, with no end in sight, my attention started to waver. I couldn’t help it, there was just no real change in the action, and every wrestler in the match (except for Amasis) was overexposed here, leading to me not really caring about any of them at the conclusion of the match. There were a lot of good performances, and a lot of stuff that made me excited for when we review a Chikara show, but the length of this match did a serious disservice to everyone in it.

Still though, fun is fun, and its here to be had. Dig in, me hearties, yo ho.

68 out of 100.

Vice: Amasis – Fucking awesome guy. He’s in an Egyptian stable and they’re all awesome. Unfortunately he’s the only one present here, but he does what he does best and that is to be AWESOME. He dances, he flips, he does all kinds of groovy stuff. So entertaining. He has a bright future.

Gran Akuma – Looks like a penis without his mask. Very good wrestler from what I’ve seen of him a few years ago. He’s still pretty crisp and good here, but since there were 8 people he didn’t really have a heck of a lot of time to really shine.

Icarus – He looks like the most generic indy wrestler now that he has short brown hair. He was much cooler with long blond hair. He also looked a bit more like “Icarus” with the hair, but if I had to guess, he probably lost his hair in a match or something. If that’s the case, it was a dumb decision. Either way, he looks like an idiot. Pretty versatile worker and is able to be carried/have his weaknesses covered by others quite well.

Hallowicked – Solid as can be. Fun in short bursts, but his entertainment drops quickly as time goes on. Glad he still has his mask, otherwise he’d be a nobody.

Jigsaw – Was a really underrated talent a few years back and had a ton of potential. Gabe got a hold of him, pushed him too hard in the wrong direction and exposed every weakness of his that there was to expose, and hasn’t fully recovered since. Glad to know that Gabe is booking this show as well. Still though, he’s a solid wrestler.

Mike Quackenbush – Indy god of wrestling. I probably sucked his dick in the last ROH review, but it’s for good reason. He knows 60,000 holds, 60,000 reversals, 60,000 counters, 60,000 arm drags.. everything. I’ve seen a ton of Quack and he always manages to do a ton of new stuff every time I see him. He’s definitely one of those guys that will never make it big, but at the same time he doesn’t really care, because he does what he loves and is one of the best at what he does.

Fire Ant & Soldier Ant – The only two people in this match that I knew absolutely nothing about. Well, they have ant masks and wrestle like their gimmicks suggest they should. Fire Ant is small and fierce and soldier ant is much bigger and does a lot of salutes. Neither got a ton of time to shine, but I really enjoyed what I saw of them. They worked well together as a team and worked well with everyone else.

This was a really fun match, though it did go on for far too long. That’s basically the problem with the “Chikara style”. It’s amazingly energetic and great, but everything is an arm drag. Arm drags look awesome, especially the crazy ones they do, but they don’t really do any damage of any kind. They don’t even really work the arm from a psychological standpoint. They’re just kind of there. So, matches tend to go on for a hell of a long time. Then you have to consider that the matches usually involve a bunch of people, so there are plenty of people ready to jump in and break up a pin.

I do really like the tag rules, being that one does not need to actually make a tag to another person. If you exit the ring, a partner can come in. These guys make good use of these rules, willing to take a nasty crash to the outside of the ring so that a fresh partner can come in. Yeah, they sacrifice their bodies a bit, but it helps the match in the long run from a kayfabe standpoint.

If this was 5-8 minutes shorter, I think it would have benefitted a lot since nothing huge ever really happened. Still, for what it was, it was pretty great. Amasis stole the spotlight and my heart. I love him. Two matches down, and two very very different wrestling styles. This is good. Variety is good.

The Colony Over Team Random Following A Jig And Tonic (Yes, I Know) From Jigsaw To Icarus.

Segment 5 – Hey Quackenbush, Your Indy is Showing.

Cewsh: Mike Quakenbush stays in the ring, post match, to deliver a promo challenging any Dragon gate wrestler to take on any Chikara wrestler. YAMATO answers, despite his having been beaten the fuck up about 1 match ago, and takes Quack up on that challenge by smacking him upside his goofy head. This touches off a HUGE rbrawl where like every member of Chikara comes to Quack’s aid, until Akuma and Icarus turn against THEM and side with YAMATO, leaving with him hand in hand. In a totally macho way of course.

Of course.

This segment is essentially what you would get if Gabe Sapolsky and Vince Russo sat down and tried to think up what would draw money.

Gabe: What if we had an underappreciated indy guy cut a promo with a Japanese guy?
Vince: Can the Japanese guy speak English?
Gabe: Nope, not at all. Is that important?
Vince: And they just talk?
Gabe: Yep, just talk.
Vince: No turns at all?
Gabe: Well we could have ONE I guess.
Vince: Fantastic, one turn and 3 run ins.
Gabe: Wait, 3? Isn’t that a bit much? Don’t people dislike tons of run ins?
Vince: I dunno. I’ve never listened to any complaints about them.

Segment 6 – Masato (Jacked To The Gills So Much He Might Be A Fish) Yoshino vs. Dragon (Note: Not Actual Dragon) Kid.

Cewsh: So here we have Masato Yoshino, one half of the tag team that first got me interested in Dragon Gate in the first place and, I thought, the good half. As it turns out, he pretty much became the Marty Jannety of he and Doi when they split up amicably, and now he’s wrestling in the middle of the card here, while his former partner is in the main event looking like a star. Oh how the times keep a changin’ Dragon Kid, on the other hand, is someone who I have heard an extremely large amount about without every having actually managed to watch him wrestle. So this will be a fun introduction for me, against I guy I think very highly of. Excitement.

The match gets started, and the high flying shenanigans start right off the bat. See Kid’s deal is that he’s basically the Asian Rey Mysterio, and he is the king of the hurracanrana. Now unlike medieval kings who would become the king of something and then spend their whole life trying to become the king of everything else also, Kid is content to just do hurracanrana after hurracanrana until even I start to get a little motion sickness watching him. The action is fast and furious for awhile, as Kid pulls every flip and jump in his repertoire out in an attempt to win this match for his friend Shingo, but Yoshino, just as fast and more powerful, seems to thwart him at every turn.

Finally, the balance of power starts to shift, some moves happen, and suddenly the match is over. Now little old me, who is looking for somebody to get spiked off the top rope like a basketball or something, found it entirely shocking for such a seemingly delicate maneuver to end this match. Vice assures me that it’s the guy’s finishing move, but compared to everything else, it just seems kind of ridiculous and weak by comparison. I guess I shouldn’t be complaining, since this match really did what I wished the first match had done (cut out the seemingly dangerous bits, and shorten the match), but I feel even more confused. Do they not see any difference between a hurracanrana and a spike brainbuster? That’s intensely worrying to me, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. It’s a shame too, because this kind of clouded me from being able to enjoy what was otherwise an absolutely fine match, with more than a few fun moments.

The match was good, not great, and I’m not sorry I saw it. But like most other things so far tonight, it just felt…off, in some significant way that I can’t fully explain. I’m still hoping they can turn it around by the end of the show.

61 out of 100.

Vice: It’s at this point that I’m starting to really dislike Dawn Marie’s announcing. Instead of the usual “Coming to the ring from [location], weighing in at [pounds]… [NAME!!!!]”, she basically just stands there until the guy is about to enter the ring and simply says the name of the wrestler. Give her some cue cards or something please. I’m also reminded why I absolutely hate female ring announcers. People like FINK and Bobby Cruise should always be the top dogs. Fuck people like Lillian and Justin Roberts or whatever his name is. Yes, his name. He’s a guy. But he’s stupid enough to be considered a female.

This match is basically an exhibition match of sorts. Yeah, apparently there’s some backstory about something and someone and chocolate milk and cell phone bills, but really it’s just “hey, this dude is ridiculously fast and so is that other guy… hmmmmmmmm….”. Pow. Match of the insanely fast people. And these guys really are insanely fast. Yoshino running the ropes is just epic. He’s that fucking fast. Dragon Kid is like a 1996 Rey Mysterio, but modernized. Does that make any sense? Probably not, but whatever.

So, you have two of the fastest wrestlers on the planet.. so you’ve got to wonder—how long will this match be?

15 minutes. Hi, Gabe.

It was entertaining, but it’s more of the same.

Segment 7 – The (Only The Good Die) Young Bucks vs. CIM(s Like You Should Have Retired By Now)A and Susumu (Dr. McRadpants) Yokosuka.

Cewsh: Yes, this is Officer Cewsh with the Cewsh Reviews Police Department, and we need to put an APB out on the following suspects. The fantastic high fliers, the Young Bucks who we have here are heavily favored to be the tag team of the year this year, and also on two men, Japaense by birth it says here, going by the names of CIMA and Susumu Yokosuka. These men are formally charged with trespassing on a terrible show that they clearly don’t belong on, and will be done up for larceny, for stealing the entire show, worth an estimated $26.

This right here is the cure to what ails me. I’ve been having a decent to bad time watching this entire show, and it got to the point where I was filled with cynicism about this match, as I assumed that not even the Young Bucks could cheer me up now. Boy was I wrong. From their first seamless and fluid tag move, to the final show of athleticism and chemistry, I was hooked in 100%. We all pretty much know at this point how I feel about them Bucks, so I won’t pontificate over much on their terrific terrificness, and instead I’ll focus on the other half of what made this a good match. CIMA and Yokosuka. They were fantabulous. Its funny as well, because I generally think very little of both men, but here they brought out everything good that either had to offer and played a great foil for the Bucks as they went about the business of impressing the beejesus out of me.

I know I’m neglecting the play by play to tell you all what brilliance lies beyond the clouds, but I’m just so incredibly happy to be able to be positive about something, that I’m practically bursting with it. But this is a credible journalistic institution, and gods damn it, you deserve some play by play. So here goes.

The Young Bucks: Double Team Move.
CIMA and Yokosuka: Double Team Move.
TYB: Babyface in Peril.
CaY: Cocky posing.
TYB: Double Team Move.
CaY: Ridiculous moves from every angle.
TYB and CaY: Ridiculous clusterfuck of awesome.
Cewsh: Cries one single tear of joy.

Cewsh’s Download Seal of Approval

Vice: The Young Bucks are a wonderful young tag team for sure. It’s safe to say that they’re the indy Hardy Boyz of this generation, and I mean that in a good way. These two guys are just so fun to watch. Every match of theirs is pretty much exactly the same formula, but they sure as hell picked a good one. I’d like to see them switch it up a bit in the future, but what they’re doing works for right now.

That said, this was a very fun match to watch. Tons of high flying, ridiculous spots and insane bumps. Definitely fun as hell, even if pretty much nothing meant anything and got way, way, way too much time. Like, 20-25 minutes here I think. So, again, this was more of the same as the rest of the show.

Find some Young Bucks matches if you want to see some ridiculous tag team work. I still dream of a Young Bucks/Motor City Machine Guns match

Segment 8 – They’re Baaaaack…

Cewsh: So there Shingo and Doi are, in the locker room, innocently trying to prepare for their all important match, when the same guy from earlier starts sticking cameras with zoom lens so far into these guy’s faces, I’m fairly certain that on a clear day I could have read their minds. He runs down his spiel about how important they are with his “I’m a gameshow host on Youtube” voice, and it actually makes the match seem LESS important.

Nice to know that Shingo wears no underwear though. Thanks guys.

Segment 9 – Naruki (If He Was Born A Blonde I’ll Eat My Penguin Hat) Doi © vs. Shing(les Are An Important Consideration For Any Home Improvement Project)o.

Cewsh: We have reached the main event for the very first show in the history of Dragon Gate USA. This is the centerpiece for their debut show, and, conceivably, the match they’re holding up to represent the product from the get go. That’s a helluva lot to stand up to. Will these two be able to carry the load?

Out first in the Shingo Warrior himself, sporting, as always, the most ridiculous hair I have ever seen in the history of professional wrestling. A Mohawk on top, with kind of a topknot, completely shaved on the sides into snazzy patterns, and a full on mullet in the back. It’s a tacky work of art, but make no mistake, despite his questionable hair stylings, this guy has it, whatever “it” is. Then out comes Naruki Doi, and, well, he doesn’t. He’s come light years since I saw him last, which wasn’t even all that long ago, but he still looks like he doesn’t belong here. Maybe I just haven’t seen enough of his meteoric ascent this past year, but it just doesn’t feel entirely right.

These two guys start out with some chain wrestling, and then some more chain wrestling, and then they start breakdancing to the musical stylings of Rick Astley, and then Doi definitively serves Shingo, sending him into a rage, resulting in Doi getting the ever loving shit clubbed out of him. God how I wish that description was entirely accurate. Accurate or not, the match quickly dissolves into an exhibition of counters and submission moves, as both men try to get the upper hand up front. Then begins the period that I will refer to as “Shingo Is Fucking Strong”. Exhibit 1 is Shingo sitting on the ground in the turnbuckle, Doi charges him with a front flip and Shingo CATCHES HIM IN MID AIR and powerbombs his ass to the mat. Astonishing. Then they do the typical thing where the smaller guy tries to knock the bigger man down, and Shingo steps out of the way and gives Doi the most effortless and casual Death Valley Driver ever executed. Then, as an encore, he holds Doi up in a suplex for a count of fucking 30. 30 fucking seconds. I could have left the room, made a sandwich, taken a piss, come back and it still would have been fucking going on! Absolutely incorrigible.

All good things must come to an end, however, and Doi starts firing up with his comeback, doing the classic babyface fire routine that is as time tested in Japan as sushi and sexy women. Then we get about 10 minutes of just completely mind numbingly insane maneuvers piled one on top of the other. Head bumps, top rope moves, death defying flips, kick so hard they knock sweat into the fifth row. The lose their everloving minds for this stretch and the match speeds downhill to the ending. Then its slows down a little. Then a little more. Finally, after the 32nd or so kick out at two, this match becomes a parody so fast I almost didn’t notice the switchover. Things go crazy and eventually, finally, mercifully, they come to an end.

I couldn’t possibly say it half as well as Vice did, so I’ll just say this about this match. It was good. It wasn’t really good, it wasn’t even the best match on this show, but it was good, and nothing for Dragon Gate USA to be particularly ashamed of. I’m sure they all thought this was going to be download seal worthy, and they certainly busted their asses to get there. But sometimes less is more, and nothing represents that better than Gabe Sapolsky. The less Gabe, the more likely you are to get the seal.

Vice: Ah, the main event. Now, if you don’t know the style of main events (and, well, I guess any sort of indy match these days..), it’s kind of like this. Now, let’s use John Cena against Triple H for example. If it was wrestled in the same way as these indy main events, it’d be a catastrophe. For example, John Cena would hit Triple H with an FU. Triple H kicks out at 2. Not the biggest deal ever, right? Yeah. So, within two minutes, John Cena would hit Triple H with another FU. Triple H would kick out at 2 once again. Then he’d hit Cena with a pedigree for a 2 count. They’d both get right back to their feet and run around, then Cena would FU Triple H off the top rope. Triple H would kick out at 2. They’d battle back and forth before Triple H hits a pedigree off the top rope for a two count. As Cena kicks out, though, he’d somehow slip Triple H into the STFU and lock it in for about 3 minutes. Triple H would fight through the pain until he could fight no more. He goes limp. Hand goes down once. Hand goes down twice. Hand goes down th—NO! Triple H battles back! He’s in the hold for another 4 minutes as he’s trying to get to the ropes!! How does he do it!? TRIPLE HAS GOTTEN TO THE ROPES.

Wait, what?

Triple H is back on his feet and pedigrees Cena off the top rope and down onto the floor. HOLY SHIT. Triple H rolls a dead Cena in to the middle of the ring. One.. two.. thr—NOOOOO! Cena kicks out. Cena hulks up! He hits the FU on Triple H! HUH!? Triple H stands right back up! PEDIGREE! Holy shit, ANOTHER PEDIGREE! ANOTHER PEDIGREE! He gets the thre—NO HE DOESN’T!! WHAT MADNESS IS THIS! Cena starts fighting back! DEAR GOD! Triple H low blows Cena and hits a 630 off the top rope! One.. two.. th—STFU!!!! Triple H, while in the STFU, stands up (!?) and pedigrees Cena!! One.. two.. three! He’s done it! What an epic way to cap off a 30 minute match!

Now imagine that for every main event.

Fuck you, Gabe.

It was still a good, fun match, but I’m so sick of the formula.

Cewsh’s Conclusions:

Cewsh: Last week we reviewed a show that was so entertaining, that I would heartily recommend it, despite the relatively low score it earned through the matches on display. This show was exactly the opposite. It wound up getting a surprisingly good score, because nothing was really bad. However, since there wasn’t much that was really GOOD either, its hard to call this show a success. They could win me over more in the future, but its going to take more than this to get it done.

Good luck, Gabe. You have your work cut out for you.

Cewsh’s Final Score: 68.3 out of 100.

Vice’s Verdict:

Vice: Overall I’d be lying if I didn’t say this was a pretty enjoyable show, but there was so much wrong with it at the same time. All the matches were basically the same, with nothing really standing out. Same with the wrestlers; nobody reaaaally stood out for me. This was a two hour show and 85% of it was wrestling. It’s simply too much, especially when it’s all so similar in structure. Yeah it sucks when WWE dicks a match over with time because they’re running a silly skit, but at the same time those segments are essential. Yes, my friends, too much wrestling can be a very bad thing. You need breaks in between matches, otherwise you run out of fuel very quickly, and the rest of the show becomes more of a test to see if you can sit through it all without going insane.

Outside of Dawn Marie, everyone brought their A-game to this show and put a ton of heart into it. That said, this was pretty much exactly what was to be expected in terms of the wrestling style and booking, which is a bit of a problem. Gabe books the same way he did, which is one of the reasons why Ring of Honor is in the shape it’s currently in. Every show tends to be exactly the same as the last, with very few things that stand out. Every match is wrestled like it’s attempting to be match of the year, which is what kills independent wrestling. I’ll give Dragon Gate USA one more show. If it’s Gabe sucking himself off again, then there’s no reason to watch again.

Vice’s Final Score: 64 out of 100.

And just for kick's, because we're a little light on pictures this week and many of you have likely never seen these guys before, a friend of Cewsh Reviews has prepared a helpful primer for you. Chot, take it away.

]

BxB Hulk. I don't think he's amazing, but fuck me I love his entrance.

Masato Yoshino. So ridiculously fast. Just unbelievable. So fucking quick.

Dragon Kid. Cool the first time you see him, but diminishing returns.

SHINGO. You can kind of see his weird hair here. It's really weird but he makes it work.

Naruki Doi. I don't understand why he is the Ace, but he isn't really offensive.

Alright, that'll do it for us this week boys and girls. We hope you enjoyed yourself, and aren't dissapointed that we gave you this review instead of the advertised WCW Superbrawl 2000. Fear not, that sweet Russo goodness is ever so close, but first we're going to head back to the big leagues to cover the first PPV built around submission matches, WWE's Breaking Point! Will this show prove itself to be a gimmick qorth keeping? Or will John Cena vs. Randy Orton cause Vice to reach his Breaking Point? Only one way to find out. In the meantime, as always, keep right on reading, and be good to one another.
